Colic

Deworming

There are numerous customer reports that by using Total their horses were either free of parasites or had very low counts of parasites.  While specific deworming ingredients are not included, Total contains trace mineral-rich deposits that are damaging to the bodies of insects and worms which may reduce the need for chemical dewormers.  Chemical dewormers tend to upset the digestive track or become ineffective with prolonged use.

What is the difference between worming and using Total as a preventive for parasite growth?

Total’s base comes from a rich mineral deposit mined in Nevada.  It was chosen as the foundation for the Total formula by a nutritionist at Utah State University for nutritional reasons.

Later research showed a significant effect on internal parasites.  The mineral deposit contains the sharp, hard exoskeletons of ancient marine animals.  As parasites pass across it, they are cut and die.  The advantage is that this process is mechanical rather than chemical or poisonous.  Horses can have a digestive upset from the chemicals and parasites can build up immunity to these chemicals. 

With using Total, the need for worming may be reduced.  It may also be possible to replace chemical wormers with natural ones.

What is the difference between  Total and other supplements on the market?

Every supplement is different.  Carefully read all labels to determine what will work best for you.  Ingredients are listed on the label in the order of their quantity in the formula, with the largest item first. Not all ingredients are required to be listed.  Look at the guaranteed analysis to be certain what you are getting.

Will Total make my horse hyperactive?

Total contains 11.5% molasses by total weight.  Molasses itself is 40% sugar so this means a pound of  Total contains 4.6% sugar or about 3/4 of an ounce.  This compares to naturally occurring sugars in pasture grass or quality hay which may be as high as 10%-12%.  In addition, the balance of coconut and soy bean oils in Total provides fats, which are known to decrease the rate at which the blood glucose levels inside an organism rise.

Vitamin B is another nutrient with a known natural calming effect.  This is present in Total in very large amounts.  Typically, it is the number of calories a horse is fed along with a lack of exercise that is problematic.

Will Total improve the condition of my horse's hooves and coat?

Will Total help with foal scours?

Yes.  Recent research has implicated an internal parasite, Strongyloides westeri, as the true cause of foal heat scours. This parasite is transmitted from the dam to the foal through the mammary gland.  Foals begin to shed eggs in their feces 10 to 14 days after birth, resulting in scours that coincidentally occur with the foal heat in the mare.  A mare that has been on free-choice Total will have few parasites to pass on, resulting in little to no scouring!
